Level 1 Charging (120V)
Every EV comes with a Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard 120-volt household outlet. It works, but it is slow — adding roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. For a typical daily commute in the Waukesha or Milwaukee metro area (about 30 miles round trip), you would need 6 to 10 hours of charging overnight. That is fine for plug-in hybrids or very short commutes, but most EV owners find it insufficient for a fully electric vehicle.
Level 2 Charging (240V)
A Level 2 charger runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit (the same voltage as your dryer or oven) and delivers 25 to 40 miles of range per hour. Most EVs can go from empty to full overnight with a Level 2 setup. This is what we recommend and install for the vast majority of our customers. A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240V, 50-amp circuit from your electrical panel to the charging location.
What Does EV Charger Installation Cost?
For most Southeast Wisconsin homes, a complete Level 2 EV charger installation — including the charger unit, dedicated circuit, and all labor — runs between $800 and $1,500. Here is what affects the price:
- Distance from panel to charger: A charger in a garage directly below the panel is the simplest and most affordable installation. Longer runs require more wire and conduit.
- Panel capacity: If your panel is already full or undersized (100-amp service), you may need a panel upgrade to accommodate the new 50-amp circuit. This is an additional cost but often necessary in older homes.
- Charger unit: Hardwired units like the Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, or Grizzl-E range from $400 to $700. Some homeowners prefer a NEMA 14-50 outlet so they can use a portable charger.
- Permit fees: Varies by municipality, typically $50 to $150 in Waukesha and Washington counties.
Electrical Requirements
A Level 2 EV charger requires:
- 240-volt, 50-amp dedicated circuit (for a 40-amp continuous-draw charger; NEC requires the circuit to be rated at 125% of the continuous load).
- 6-gauge copper wire for runs up to about 50 feet, or 4-gauge for longer distances.
- GFCI protection — required by the 2023 NEC (adopted by Wisconsin) for all EV charging equipment.
- Sufficient panel capacity — you need 50 amps of available capacity in your panel. If you have a 100-amp panel that is already heavily loaded, an upgrade to 200-amp service may be necessary before installing the charger.
Garage vs. Outdoor Installation
Most Wisconsin homeowners install their EV charger in an attached garage, which is the simplest and most cost-effective option. The charger stays protected from our harsh winters, and the cable run from the panel is usually short.

The charger unit must be NEMA 4 rated (weatherproof), wiring must run through outdoor-rated conduit, and the installation must account for Wisconsin's freeze-thaw cycles. We bury conduit below the frost line (48 inches in Southeast Wisconsin) when running underground to a detached structure.
