Panel Upgrades

How much does a panel upgrade cost in Wisconsin?

A typical electrical panel upgrade in Wisconsin costs between $1,500 and $4,000 depending on the amperage (100A, 200A, or 400A), complexity of the installation, and whether additional circuits are needed. We provide free estimates so you know the exact cost before work begins.

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

Common signs you need a panel upgrade include frequently tripping breakers, flickering lights, a fuse box instead of a breaker panel, a panel rated under 200 amps, visible rust or damage on the panel, or if you're adding major appliances like an EV charger or hot tub. If your home is over 25 years old, an inspection is a good idea.

What size electrical panel do I need for my home?

Most modern homes need a 200-amp panel, which handles typical household loads including HVAC, appliances, and electronics. If you have an EV charger, hot tub, workshop, or other high-demand equipment, you may need a 400-amp service. We'll assess your needs during a free estimate.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

A standard panel upgrade typically takes 4 to 8 hours to complete in a single day. More complex installations involving meter upgrades or service entrance changes may take longer. We'll give you a clear timeline during your estimate.

Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in Wisconsin?

Yes, a permit is required for electrical panel upgrades in Wisconsin. As a licensed contractor, we handle all permit applications and inspections as part of our service. This ensures your upgrade meets all Wisconsin electrical codes.

EV Chargers

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

Home EV charger installation in Wisconsin typically costs between $800 and $2,500, including the charger unit and labor. The final price depends on the charger type, distance from your electrical panel, and whether a panel upgrade is needed. We install all major brands including Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, and Grizzl-E.

What's the difference between Level 2 and Level 3 EV chargers?

Level 2 chargers use 240V power (like a dryer outlet) and add about 25-30 miles of range per hour of charging. They're ideal for home use. Level 3 chargers (DC fast chargers) are typically for commercial use, providing 80% charge in 30-60 minutes but requiring significant electrical infrastructure.

Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?

It depends on your current panel capacity. A Level 2 EV charger typically requires a 40-60 amp dedicated circuit. If your panel is already near capacity or rated under 200 amps, a panel upgrade may be needed. We assess this during your free estimate.

Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector?

Yes, we install Tesla Wall Connectors as well as chargers from ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, JuiceBox, and other major manufacturers. We're experienced with all EV charger brands and can help you choose the right charger for your vehicle and driving habits.

Are there rebates for EV charger installation in Wisconsin?

Yes. The federal government offers a tax credit of up to 30% (up to $1,000) for home EV charger installation through the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. Some Wisconsin utilities also offer rebates. We can help you understand what incentives are available for your installation.

Generators

How much does a whole-house generator cost in Wisconsin?

A whole-house standby generator in Wisconsin typically costs between $5,000 and $15,000 installed, depending on the size (kilowatts), fuel type (natural gas or propane), and installation complexity. Generac generators are the most popular choice for Wisconsin homes.

What size generator do I need for my home?

The right generator size depends on what you want to power during an outage. A 10-14 kW generator covers essential circuits (lights, fridge, furnace, sump pump). A 16-22 kW generator can power your entire home including AC and electric range. We perform a load calculation to recommend the right size.

How often does a generator need maintenance?

Standby generators should be serviced at least once a year, ideally before storm season. Maintenance includes oil and filter changes, spark plug inspection, battery check, and a full operational test. Regular maintenance ensures your generator starts reliably when you need it most.

Do you install Generac generators?

Yes, we install Generac generators along with other top brands. Generac is the most popular standby generator brand in the United States and is manufactured right here in Wisconsin. We handle the full installation including the concrete pad, gas line connection, transfer switch, and all electrical work.

Safety

How often should I have an electrical inspection?

We recommend an electrical inspection every 3-5 years for homes under 25 years old, and every 1-3 years for older homes. You should also get an inspection when buying a home, after major renovations, or if you notice warning signs like flickering lights, tripping breakers, or burning smells.

What are signs of dangerous wiring in my home?

Warning signs include frequently tripping breakers, flickering or dimming lights, discolored or warm outlets, burning smells near outlets or switches, buzzing sounds from the electrical panel, and sparking when plugging in devices. If you notice any of these, call an electrician immediately.

Is knob and tube wiring safe?

Knob and tube wiring, found in homes built before 1950, is not inherently dangerous when in good condition. However, it lacks a ground wire, can't safely handle modern electrical loads, and many insurance companies in Wisconsin won't insure homes with active knob and tube wiring. We recommend having it evaluated and potentially replaced.

Why do my lights flicker?

Flickering lights can be caused by loose bulbs, faulty switches, overloaded circuits, loose wiring connections, or problems with the utility service. Occasional flickering from large appliances starting up is normal. Persistent flickering, especially across multiple rooms, should be evaluated by a licensed electrician as it could indicate a serious wiring issue.

When should I upgrade from a fuse box to a breaker panel?

You should upgrade from a fuse box to a circuit breaker panel if you're experiencing blown fuses regularly, adding new appliances, or if your home insurance requires it. Fuse boxes are outdated and can't safely handle modern electrical demands. Most insurance companies in Wisconsin charge higher premiums or won't insure homes with fuse boxes.
