Your Furnace or Boiler Kicks On and a Breaker Trips. Here's What That Means at Your House
If you live in Random Lake, Cedarburg, West Bend, Sheboygan, or anywhere in our eight counties, you have probably heard the furnace kick on — then a click in the basement, and the heat stops. The kitchen lights are still on. Only the heat is gone. That is not the same problem as one dead receptacle.
A dead outlet is usually not your heat
One dead plug is often a GFCI that tripped, a loose device, or a single lighting and receptacle run. You find a TEST/RESET in the garage or bathroom, hit RESET once, and a lamp comes back. The house still has heat.
A furnace or boiler that trips a breaker when it starts is a different circuit. Heat is usually on its own breaker. When that opens, you lose the blower, the draft inducer, the boiler pump, and the controls — the equipment that keeps pipes from freezing. You did not "just" lose a lamp.
What that trip is often telling you
When heat calls, motors start. A blower, an inducer, a circulator pump — they pull more for a second at start than they do while running. Worn bearings, a seized pump, a shorted winding, a failed transformer, or a damaged whip at the disconnect can push that start past what the breaker will hold. Sometimes the furnace shares a basement run with a freezer or a shop load. Sometimes the breaker itself is tired.
None of that is a diagnosis you should finish at the panel. Do not tape the breaker on. Do not swap it for a bigger one so the heat stays on. Do not jumper the disconnect. The breaker is doing the job it was built for.
Leave it off after it trips on a heat call. If it came back on and died again when the unit started, that is enough. Repeated resets are how a short becomes a smell, then a fire.
Heat, well, and sump — why winter changes the call
In Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Washington, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Fond du Lac, Calumet, and Manitowoc County, a night without heat is not a comfort complaint. Pipes freeze. If you also lost the well — or you are not sure that breaker is still on — you have no water for the house, and a boiler that needs makeup water is in worse shape. If the sump is dark, a thaw or a high water table still puts water in the basement.
From a safe place, confirm the well and the sump still have power. On a lot of houses here they sit on their own breakers. On some older basement work they were never separated. If those are dark too, say so when you call.
A space heater on a working lamp circuit is not a substitute for a diagnosed furnace circuit. Plug it into a receptacle that is not the problem breaker, keep it clear of bedding, and do not run a stack of them.
Neighbors dark? Call the utility first
If your neighbors have no porch light either, start with the name on your electric bill — not the furnace. We Energies, Alliant, and municipal utilities (Plymouth, Sheboygan Falls, Kiel, and others) split this footprint by address. Do not guess from the town name. Look at the bill.

If your lights are on, the neighbors' lights are on, and only the heat died when the unit kicked, that is a house problem. Leave the tripped breaker off and call us.
What you can check without opening the panel
Look from a safe place. Is the rest of the house on? Did it trip the moment the thermostat called? Is there a burning smell at the furnace, the boiler, the disconnect, or the panel? Do you hear a buzz, or see scorch at the unit?
Do not keep flipping the breaker. Do not open the furnace disconnect or fish in a wet boiler room. A GFCI reset on a receptacle is a different device. This is a breaker. Leave it.
If you see fire, smoke, or a downed line, or anyone has been shocked, call 911 first. Then see what to do in an electrical emergency.
If the unit needs a new dedicated circuit or other permitted wiring, that work is judged under the code in force when the permit is pulled. After September 1, 2026, that calendar is on our Wisconsin NEC 2023 post. Your existing furnace circuit is not illegal on Tuesday. New work is current-code work — residential electrical work we permit and inspect.
Call us if the heat trips a breaker when it starts, will not hold, smells hot, or you also lost the well or the sump.
